Every 1 Out of 3 People Has Thyroid Disease
Special Imperial Hospital General Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Orhan Şahin pointed out that most of the common thyroid nodules were operated unnecessarily, "Thyroid diseases are very common in our country with 30%. So much so that one out of every three people is suffering from thyroid. The greatest part of them also constitute thyroid nodules about 40%. Unfortunately, the majority of such thyroid nodules are operated unnecessarily, "he said.
Recalling that thyroid is extremely important for the body. Falcon, "thyroid gland in front of the neck, just in front of the throat, an average of 20 grams of weight is a secretory cloth. It secretes thyroid hormones which are extremely important for the body. So much so that these hormones serve as orchestral chiefs for metabolism. It regulates the body's energy level, metabolism rate, circulation, digestion and nervous systems. Hypothyroidism (low activity of the thyroid gland) occurs when these secreted hormones are inadequate, hyperthyroidism (hyperactivity of the thyroid gland) when it is secreted excessively. In the case of hyperthyroidism, when there is complaints such as palpitation, weight loss, nervousness, trembling in hands, sweating, hair loss, and in case of insufficiency of epidemic (hypothyroidism), weight, fatigue, body water retention (edema) voice annoyance, decreased bowel movements, menstrual irregularities occur such complaints. Thyroid nodules are round shaped occurrences of 5-6 mm to 7-8 cm, which are formed by the differentiation of cell groups within thyroid tissue. The diagnosis can easily be made by ultrasonography, "he said.
"About 90-95% of the nodules are benign, but 5% to 10% can turn into cancer," Sahin said. "About 90-95% of the nodules are benign, 5% to 10% are cancerous. This rate is slightly higher in endemic goitre areas like the Black Sea Region. Especially the risk of turning single and cold nodules into cancer is high. "
EVERY THYROID NEEDS NODULU SURGERY?
Not every nodule needs surgery, Sahin said, "Every nodule does not require surgery. The most important criterion here is the size of the nodule. In the past, even when 1-1.5 cm nodules were operated and the entire thyroid gland was removed, most of the nodules were followed along with the technology developed, unnecessary surgeries were prevented and the loss of work-power caused by surgery was prevented. Operative criteria; The hormone of the nodule is activated and the excessive thyroid hormone secretion, the size of the nodule is aesthetically problematic, the nodule grows excessively, causing pressure on the respiratory and food borne, and causing voice trouble, swallowing difficulties ".
Recalling that the nodules should be considered well for surgery, Şahin said, "It is useful to repeat the following, if you will be operated on because of the nodule in your thyroid, all the nodules up to 2.5-3 centimeters are followed without surgery. This is not a surgical method. It is followed by nodules if the result is benign after the biopsy. If the result is suspicious, the patient is scheduled to undergo surgery. In this way unnecessary surgeries for the thyroid are also prevented nowadays.
