Prof. Dr. Adnan ÇALIK
General Surgery Specialist
Prof. Dr. Adnan Çalık graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982. Between 1984 and 1990, he completed his residency in General Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine, Karadeniz Technical University (KTU), where he continued working as a specialist. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1992 and became a Full Professor in 1998. Prof. Dr. Çalık retired in May 2025. Throughout his career, he has specialized particularly in endocrine, hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, and breast surgery, as well as advanced laparoscopic procedures, distinguishing himself with a multidisciplinary surgical practice. In 1990, he founded the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at KTU Medical Faculty and served as an instructor in gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and rectoscopy. He has significantly contributed to the certification training of general surgery residents in endoscopy. In 1993, he received training in endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery at Hippocration General Hospital in Greece, and the same year served as an observer at the Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, USA. In 1995, he completed further laparoscopic surgery training at Hermann Hospital, Texas Medical Center, Houston, and returned there as an observer in 1996. In 1997, he also served as an observer at a state hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1994, Prof. Dr. Çalık performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the region, pioneering a significant advancement in surgical practice. In 2007, he played an active role in the liver transplantation program initiated under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Serdar Topaloğlu; in addition, he has contributed to approximately 400 liver resection surgeries in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Topaloğlu. In 2012, he received advanced laparoscopic surgery training on live pigs at the IRCAD Experimental Animal Laboratory, University of Strasbourg, France. He has also participated in numerous national courses and earned certifications, particularly in laparoscopic, breast, and colorectal surgery. Since 1998, Prof. Dr. Çalık has been a member of prominent international organizations including the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES). He is also a member of several national surgical societies such as the Turkish Surgical Society, the National Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery (ELCD), and the Eastern Black Sea Breast Diseases Society. Prof. Dr. Çalık has supervised numerous postgraduate theses, delivered graduate-level courses, and served as a reviewer and consultant for various national and international academic journals. Committed to public education, he has appeared on regional television and in newspapers to raise awareness on health-related issues. He is the author of numerous scientific articles published in Turkish and international journals, as well as five book chapters. Additionally, he has attended and contributed to the organization of numerous national and international congresses, scientific meetings, and surgical training courses.
